When this documentary study of James Pitot’s life was started by descendant Henry C. Pitot, nothing of value was available in the way of family records and letters. Fortunately, from archives here and in France, it has been possible to reconstruct some of the more important events in his life. Here was a man with energy and ambition who left his native France to go to Saint-Domingue, and when revolutions in both places forced him to look elsewhere, he came to the United States and eventually to Louisiana to establish his family and to seek his fortune. The record shows that he played an important part in the city government of New Orleans during the period following the Louisiana Purchase when the Crescent City was emerging from Spanish domination and starting to build the foundations of the great city that is today.
